Medical Consultation with Emphasis on Lifestyle and Nutrition
I will take the time to get to know your personal health issues in depth, using the bio-psycho-social model and considering family history, environment and stress along with all the usual physical factors. After learning what your goals are, we will proceed to advice on beneficial lifestyle changes, medication, supplements and especially nutrition. The main dietary approach that I use is the Whole Food Plant Based Diet, tailored to reflect individual health priorities.
Why nutrition? The bottom line is that in many of the most common medical conditions, dietary change should be a first line treatment, even according to the most conservative guidelines. One reason that conventional dietary change is often disappointing, is because the official guidelines are too similar to the usual unhealthy diet. Quite likely, the Whole Food Plant Based Diet will be the guideline of the future.
I ask each patient to prepare for their appointment by filling out a health questionnaire and bringing a copy of recent lab tests, a list of any medications and supplements and allergies to food or medicine. In addition I ask each patient to bring a list of everything they have eaten over a 3 day period. This preparation saves us time during the appointment.
When making significant dietary changes it is likely that medicines may need to be reduced. It is really only safe to do this with medical supervision.
My approach is inspired by the work of several of the medical pioneers of the Whole Food Plant Based diet, Dr’s Ornish, Esselstyn, Fuhrman, McDougall and T. Colin Campbell. This is also the approach recommended by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
Although appointments in the clinic are preferable, especially where physical exam is needed, and especially for initial appointments, from now, patients who live far away or abroad will be able to have a medical consultation with me via Skype.
